  • Multiple choice examination in which candidates must demonstrate what they have learnt.

  • Practical assessment in which participants must show how to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout the course to real life situations.

Certification
Successful candidates receive an IOSH-approved certificate.
Is IOSH Managing Safely a legal requirement?

It is not a statutory requirement, but it is widely recognised as the benchmark qualification for managers and supervisors responsible for health and safety at work. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must provide adequate H&S information, instruction, and training. IOSH Managing Safely is one of the most widely accepted ways to meet that duty. Many insurers, principal contractors, and procurement teams also ask for evidence of H&S training, and this qualification is consistently accepted.

How long does the online course take to complete?
The course includes approximately 24 hours of video-based learning content across seven modules, plus an online assessment and a work-based risk assessment project. Most learners complete everything over 2 to 4 weeks, working in their own time. You have 190 days from the date of enrolment to complete the course.
What is the pass mark?

Each of the seven teaching modules has a 70% pass mark, which must be achieved before moving on. The final online assessment (30 interactive questions) has a 60% pass mark. The work-based practical task (conducting a risk assessment in your own workplace) also requires 70%. If you do not pass first time, resits are permitted without additional cost.

Do I need any prior qualifications?

No. IOSH Managing Safely is designed for managers and supervisors at all levels, including those with no prior formal H&S training. If you are looking for an entry-level qualification for non-managerial staff, IOSH Working Safely may be more appropriate, this will be available through York Green shortly.

What certificate will I receive?

On successful completion of both the online assessment and the practical risk assessment project, you will receive an official IOSH Managing Safely Digital Certificate issued by IOSH. IOSH maintains a searchable register of certified individuals, which employers and clients can use to verify your qualification.

Can I buy the course for multiple people?

Yes. Group enrolments are available and we offer discounted rates for teams of five or more. Contact York Green for a group quote and we will set up your team’s access.

What are the technical requirements?

The course is 100% browser-based, no software installation is needed. You will need an up-to-date web browser and video drivers, at least 1GB of RAM and a broadband connection of 3Mb or faster. The course is accessible on desktop and laptop computers.

How does this differ from IOSH Working Safely?

IOSH Managing Safely is designed for people who manage or supervise others and have responsibility for H&S standards in their team or site. It is significantly more in-depth and includes a practical risk assessment project. IOSH Working Safely is the entry-level version, aimed at all workers regardless of seniority, and requires less time to complete. Both qualifications are IOSH-approved and internationally recognised.
