Why we exist

Most safety reports are written to be filed

They list hazards at length, reference the right regulations, and never tell anybody what to do on Monday morning. They satisfy the person who commissioned them and help nobody who has to act on them.

York Green was set up to produce the other kind. Every assessment ends in a prioritised action plan: what to fix, in what order, by when and who owns it. What we found and judged adequate is recorded too, because you need to be able to show what was looked at, but the report is built around the actions.

The Greenlight Call comes from the same thinking. Twenty minutes, no charge, to work out what you need before anybody quotes for it. Where a price range can be published we publish it, so you can budget before you pick up the phone. Where the cost turns on what already exists, we say so and price it once we have seen the site. Either way the scope, the price and the turnaround date are agreed in writing before work starts.

Whoever attends your site and whichever assessment you have booked, these hold.

One documented method

Every assessment follows the same written procedure for its discipline, so two assessors produce the same report on the same site.

Technical sign-off

Every report is reviewed and signed off by a Chartered practitioner before it reaches you.

The price is the price

Scope, fixed price and turnaround date in writing after the call and before anyone comes to site. No hourly billing, no day rate, no extras afterwards.

We will talk you out of it

If the honest answer is that you do not need what you are asking for, you get told that instead of a quote for it.

Work is delivered by professionally qualified assessors working under James's direction, with James personally involved in scoping every job and signing off every report.

James founded York Green to make genuine health and safety expertise reachable by the businesses that need it most, which are rarely the ones with a safety department already.

He has 25+ years across health, safety, fire and environmental management, including 16+ years on DSEAR and ATEX work in chemical manufacturing, food production, logistics and process industry. He scopes the work, sets the method and signs off the reports.

Alan Sykes

Alan Sykes

Principal Health and Safety Consultant

Based in Bridgnorth, West Midlands

Alan runs fire risk assessments, DSEAR, PUWER and general health and safety assessments out of the West Midlands. On manufacturing, warehousing and engineering sites he is usually the assessor who turns up, and he is the one to ask about machinery guarding and work equipment.

He spent over thirty years in manufacturing in production roles and in risk assessment, before he started consulting in 2015. Twenty of those were on the shop floor at a foil plant in Bridgnorth, leading a team of eighteen, then power press setting to PUWER at a tier one automotive supplier in Telford and plant commissioning in Oman and India.

Three values, and what each one costs us

Care and respect

For the people on the site as much as the person signing the invoice. An assessment that ignores how the job is really done protects nobody.

What it costs: longer visits. Talking to operators about the workarounds they have built takes time that a walk round with a clipboard does not.

Innovation and inspiration

Proactive rather than reactive. The point of an assessment is the change it causes, not the document it produces.

What it costs: argument. Recommending a change costs the client money, and the easy path is to record the hazard and leave it there.

Competence

Named, evidenced and checkable. We will show you the registrations, and we will tell you when a job needs somebody we are not.

What it costs: the work we turn away. Saying a job needs a specialist we do not have means handing it to someone else.

Our own health and safety management is independently audited by Alcumus and reassessed every year. Membership number and certificate available on request.
Assessed by an SSIP member scheme
SafeContractor is an SSIP member scheme, so our assessment is recognised by other SSIP schemes and can be validated through the SSIP portal without a second audit.

Where we work

Nationwide, concentrated in the North West and the Midlands

Most of our work is in the North West and the Midlands: Cheshire and Merseyside, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, Shropshire and the Midlands, and across into Yorkshire.

We also work nationwide, and have delivered assessments as far as London, Lincoln and the South Coast. Wherever the site is, the price you are quoted after the Greenlight Call is the price.
